ELIJAH - Scene Nine - The Wrap-up

Published on 7 November 2023 at 12:54

God’s response to Elijah is one worth listening to. It could be understood that his message was threefold, “I am not done with my people, I am not done with you and you aren’t alone”. Those are messages as critical in today’s world as they were in Elijah’s. But on a much deeper level, His message likely said, “Your eyes need to be on me and not what you think I should be doing”. Success is not measured by expectations that are met but by faith in The One whom we serve.  Outcomes and timing are His responsibility and not ours.

In obedience, Elijah left Mt. Sinai.  Some things needed to be said to King Ahab and to Ahab’s successor Ahaziah, among others. He had “prophet work” to do and on those things, he was focused. He even was allowed the opportunity to call fire down from heaven again for God’s purposes, twice. Maybe God was humoring him, we don’t know, but what happened next was very unexpected and very honoring. Elijah had the most spectacular call-up of any prophet, priest, king, or even patriarch before him. We read in 2 Kings 2 that while he and his assistant/protégé, Elisha, were out for a walk, “suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven”. What a way to go!

So, how do we relate to a man such as this with a nature such as ours? Well, we won’t likely do what Elijah did or maybe not even feel what Elijah felt. No fire or flour and oil or ravens will be in our future. But we can be assured that our need to keep our eyes on, and our faith in, God with whatever God brings our way or calls us to do is just as important to us as it was to Elijah.

“Faith in God” is not a slogan to repeat or a mantra to embrace. It is a perspective – for sure. It involves action - without question. But it is also a presence, a posture that is ready to do and to act in obedience to God regardless of our expectations. So, what do we do and how do we know what is next? We listen, sometimes for a gentle, quiet word, and then we take the next step knowing full well that God is in the journey and His purposes will be accomplished.
