SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 14:22-33
“there may be a time in our lives when we are invited into the supernatural.”
Peter was like you and me. He knew plenty of stories about supernatural things. Since a child, he likely heard about the crossing of the Red Sea, manna from heaven, and the contest between Elijah and Baal. But when it came to his everyday life not a lot of the supernatural was happening. When Jesus showed up, however, that all changed. Watching Jesus heal the sick was not such a hard thing for Peter to grasp, I suspect. But, then, He went and gave sight to the blind man and turned water into wine at the wedding feast. And when Jesus fed thousands with only the lunch of a boy and calmed the storm with a mere few words, Peter’s worldview drastically changed.
Watching the supernatural take place in front of him was one thing but when Peter was invited into the supernatural that was another thing altogether. I think we tend to remember the story of Jesus walking on the water but the real significant thing that day was that Peter joined Him. He went from hearing about the supernatural to observing the supernatural to participating in the supernatural.
That is a progression that is hard to imagine we would participate in on this earth. Especially in such a tangible way as Peter did when he cautiously drew one foot and then the other out of the boat and onto the water. His bold adventure, however, gave us a picture of faith that revealed a connection between the supernatural One and us mere mortals who would much prefer to stay inside the boat.
Every tentative step out there on the sea was probably etched in Peter’s memory for the rest of his life. If he wrote in his journal that day it may well have read… “I will never forget the knowing twinkle in the eyes of my Lord as he pulled me up out of the water with a firm grip on my hand. But above all else, I will learn and then re-learn over and over again that nothing is impossible for this salty old “fisherman turned preacher” when his eyes are on Jesus”.
There may be a time in our lives when we are invited into the supernatural. But whether the invite comes or not we are called upon to embrace a God who can do all things and who desires us to step way beyond our own limited perspective as we walk with Him in faith.
